2nd Asia CliC Symposium

- The state and fate of Asian Cryosphere -

October 22 – 26, 2007

Lanzhou, China

Second Circular

Objectives and Outline:

The cryosphere is changing in Asia, as well as globally, due mainly to global warming. The long term impact of these climatological changes on the environment and the residents is still uncertain. This Symposium will focus on the Asian region component of the cryosphere within the context of the global climate system. This meeting follows from the 1st Asia CliC symposium held in Yokohama, Japan in March 2006. The objectives of the Symposium are to exchange scientific results and information, to discuss the main issues related to the cryosphere in this region, to develop plans for implementation, and to coordinate ongoing and future CliC-related activities in the Asian region. The Organizers expect participation of scientists/engineers, students and also funding bodies from Asian countries and globally.

The symposium is open to all scientists who are interested in questions related to the cryosphere in the eastern part of the Eurasian continent and surrounding regions.

The main scientific sessions will focus on:

(1) Glacier distribution/changes

(2) Frozen ground/Permafrost condition and changes

(3) Snow cover, cold region hydrology and water resources

(4) Land surface and atmosphere processes in cold region and mountains

(5) Large-scale cryosphere-atmosphere interactions

(6) Predictability and predictions of the cryosphere

(7) Cryospheric database

Examples include discussing of a Eurasian snow cover data set, of a high-Asia glacier inventory and monitoring data base, of a permafrost data base, and establishment of cryosphere CEOP sites.

Examples include issues related to modeling and predicting GLOF’s, water supplies, and future

(8) Strategies for integrating and coordinating future cryospheric research

The sessions will be composed of both oral and poster presentations on the above topics, In addition, there will be one day of more focused sessions on specific and will have one day of split sessions on specified topics (such as snow cover, frozen ground, glaciers and meltwater, ice cores, etc) with more time for in depth discussions of science issues coordination of plans, and preparation of implementation strategies.

Symposium language will be English.

Associated meeting

The Symposium will follow the Symposium on Changes of Climate and Environment on the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding regions (Language in Chinese) (October 18-20), which is an open meeting. Participation is recommended for those all who are interested in changes of hydrology, meteorology, ecology, land-use and environment on the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding regions.
