dongtu.jpgThe State Key Laboratory of Frozen Soil Engineering founded in 1992 is an important laboratory of international significance in the permafrost research. The Lab occupies a building of 3864m2 for experiment and research, including a room of 520m2 configured with various material testing machines and advanced instrument, for low temperature experiment. There is also a guesthouse for the guest scientists. The Lab has done all the preparation to attract scientists from both domestic and overseas for the research collaboration in the field of fundamental, forward-looking and integrated scientific issues relating to engineering, resource and environment of the national concern in the economic development in the cold regions.

The Laboratory of Ice Core and Cold Regions Environment was founded in 1991 and was accepted as an open laboratory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1996. The lab is the hardcore part of the Section for Cryosphere and Global Change Research and is one of the important supporting sections for the Knowledge Innovation Pilot Project of the Institute. bingxin.jpgThe lab has been authenticated to provide for Master Degree and Doctor Degree Programs, and post doctorial research. Aiming at the global change research, the lab plough into the research on the storing mechanism of climatic and environmental information in the three cold polar regions (Antarctic, Greenland and Tibetan Plateau) and the establishment of climatic sequences with various time scales, in order to reveal the relationship between glacier fluctuations and climatic change and forecast the future trend of climatic and environmental changes and variations of glacier resources.

tianshan.jpgTianshan Glaciological Station is one of the open field stations of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the only field station in China which conducting the monitoring of cryosphere and relevant field experiment. It is also a representative station of the world for the glacier dynamic monitoring in the inland Central Asia continent.

Shapotou Desert Experiment and Research Station is an open field station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, too, which is also shapotou.jpgbelonging to the China Ecological System Research Network. This station is presently a research site of the Human and Biosphere Project of the UNESCO and a training center of the International Desertification Harnessing.

naiman.jpgNaiman Station for Desertification Experiment and Research is one of the field stations of the China Ecological System Research Network. Its main focus is on the monitoring and harnessing of desertification in the interleaving areas of agriculture and animal husbandry, and on the restoration ecological experiment and research.

Besides, the Institute also directs its research emphasis towards the typical geography and ecological environment in the west China by supporting the field stations like the Station for the Integrated Observation and Research on the Tibetan Plateau (mainly conducting the observation and research on permafrost, cold regions environment and atmospheric physics on the plateau), Pingliang Thunder Lightning and Windstorm Experimental Station (mainly on the observation and research of the convective windstorm and thunder lightning physics), Linze Water-land Resource and Ecological Experimental and Research Station (mainly on the experiment and research of the sustainable development in the inland basin), and Gaolan Ecological Experimental and Research Station (mainly on the ecological monitoring and research in the transition area of semi arid to arid regions).
